Have You Ever Heard of the Fun Theory–Giant Piano Stairs?

Have you ever heard of the fun theory? This is a theory that follows the premise that making something fun is the easiest way to change a person’s behavior for the better. Think about that for a second, and really consider how powerful this concept can be!
The Challenge: Can we get more people to choose the stairs by making it fun to do? In Odenplan Stockholm, The fun theory was applied to some stairs in order to get people to take the stairs instead of the escalator. The escalator is easier. Everyone normally chooses to use the escalator because they are tired and unmotivated (and much of our behavior is programmed).

Walking Composers

If stairs played musical notes when you walked on them, would you be more likely to take them? When the fun theory was applied, the challenge became – get more people to take the stairs! The tactic that they used was simple. They turned the regular staircase into a piano staircase. The stairs made sounds, just like the keys on a piano. Most travelers chose fun. This basic change resulted in 66% more people choosing to take the stairs. Amazing! The video, by the way, of people skipping the escalator in favor of composing music on the piano stairs subway station has been viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube to date.

Play Your Way to Profits

This is solid proof that the fun theory works like a bomb. People could see that the piano keys were just stairs, but because it looked like fun – the decision was easy. Apply this theory to work, and you have an amazing tool on your side. Productive play generates energy. Energy is the capacity to work. Play not only makes work more enjoyable, but it increases performance. A happy employee works harder, stays longer, maintain their composure in a crisis and take better care of customers and the organization.

Take Yourself Lightly and Your Work Serious

When leaders lighten up and create a fun workplace, there is a significant increase in the level of employee trust, creativity and communication-leading to lower turnover, higher moral and a stronger bottom line. So, the easiest way to change people’s behavior is to make it fun! It’s called the fun theory.

When Work and Play Collide!

What if play was an essential part of work? What if it has been the missing ingredient that has forced people to adopt an unhealthy, serious attitude towards work, career and their lives in general? The average American spends about 1,700 hours every year working. Worse still, are the much higher numbers worked by people […]
